My times with Tubelord

I met Tubelord when I moved to Kingston to go to University, although strangely I got to know them as people better at a show I was supporting them at in Northampton - the place I had just moved from. At the time the band line up was Dave, Sean and Joe. We were backstage joking about Sean’s mullet and what a slut Del Noble is, and it was then that I knew I’d made some sick new friends.

They had just released Our First American Friends at this point, which became the album of the year for me. It marked a time of change and starting fresh - having just moved from Northampton and made all these new friends and being at University, and playing all these great shows with all these great bands. It certainly went quite some way to opening my mind musically, as well as uniting me with people of similar music tastes in Kingston, and therefore welcoming me into this scene of amazing music and great people.
You can’t downplay this stuff.
I’m not sure Tubelord even realise what a big impact they have made on me as a person, as a musician, and how they helped me to settle into a new life amongst new people in a new town.

I didn’t know at the time that Feed Me a Box of Words, Synthesise and He Awoke On a Bench in Abergavennny were to become songs that would remind me of certain people and great times for years to come. If they weren’t my friends, those songs would still resonate with me just as deeply.

Needless to say I went on to support them at a ton more shows including both their album launches (which was where I first met/watched Tall Ships), and played many of the same festivals, all of which were some of the most fun shows of my life. Sean left, Damien replaced, Damien left, Tom and Jamie joined. Jamie and I had been good friends for a while before he joined officially, but it was great to get to know Tom better in this time as well.

I did some backing vocals on the EP Tezcatilpoca when they were in their interim period of no bassist, and before Jamie officially joined. I got to make vaguely sexual noises into a mic that day, and that was also the day I got to know Jamie better. (Those two comments are entirely independent of each other.)

Some time after this, Dave played drums on my EP, Katie Malco and The Slow Parade. He was professional and handsome throughout.

We were supposed to play an all-dayer in Kingston for Del’s birthday in 2010, but we got snowed in at my flat so Dave, Jamie and I spent the whole day making a snow wench (a snowman with boobs) and watching It’s a Wonderful Life and eating and drinking mulled wine. It was probably one of the most perfect days ever.

A short time after that the guys started recording the new album, Romance. We organised a shit ton of our friends to come to my Uni studio, and we all sang about horses and wooped and cheered and made funny noises. (For the album - not just for a laugh.)
That was also a great day.

University came to an end, and so did our time in Kingston. Dave and I decided we wanted to move to London shortly after that, and we made it so. We collected some pals and moved into a super awesome flat in Brixton. Dave became a tour manager with On Dry Land, and I……became a receptionist…..
So we were growing up I guess.
Tubelord released Romance in this time, and I played In Greenland to death (but only when Dave wasn’t home).

Dave has moved out of our flat now (not because I’m a shit flatmate honestly…), so for me and my flatmates, it all feels a bit like the end of an era.
It will feel like the end of an era for everyone involved in this scene really (and I do hate to overuse that word but I don’t know how else to describe it), what with the end of Colour, Blakfish, Dananananakroyd, Dartz, and many other great bands of the same ilk. And for me this all relates to Kingston - a great place with a great music scene and awesome people, and where I went to some of the best shows of my life and did some of my most important growing up.

Life happens and people grow and learn, and sometimes something that fitted so well and seemed so right at one point can eventually not feel so relevant any more. And so it was no snap decision that Tubelord eventually decided to focus on other things. This is a shame, and it is very sad, and it happens to the greatest bands. But the nice thing about it is that it also helps to shape a period of your life where this scene of bands was all that mattered, and this music was all you wanted to listen to. You can look back fondly, as I know I certainly will, and move on and grow up. Another set of bands and albums will help colour and shape the next bit of your life. This is not to say I am not really sad to leave the Tubelord part behind - I really am.

Aside from being amazing musicians, skilled songwriters, dope people, hilarious and great friends of mine, Tubelord’s music marks a very profound period of my life. So for that reason they will always be special to me.

niki-photographystuff:

Katie Malco Supporting Kevin Devine in Kingston.

What a lovely show.

From the Kevin Devine show on Tuesday. Niki is really good at photos and super nice too.

Mud, beer, baccy, bands.

Hiya…

I’m just watching Glastonbury and feeling jealous that I am not playing it….
I’d kill a member of Coldplay just to take their place in the band and play the Pyramid Stage.

This isn’t an attractive side of me.

Jimmy Eat World were good. Battles were good. Obvs. Noah and The Whale look kinda bored…..but they sound good.
Ummm….Coldplay didn’t play that one song I like so….
Thats all I’ve watched so far.

I wrote a new song and it won’t get finished. I wrote three others that are finished but aren’t as satisfying as the unfinished one.

I’m playing with Stagecoach in Harrow on 30th June by the way. I can’t remember what day of the week or where….but the night is called Fool’s Paradise….google it! I’m sorry.

I’m in the middle of sad bad life choices where I have to do the right things, but I don’t know what they are.

I have ended up putting on Janelle Monae at Glasto. I’m not sure what’s going on. xx
