Top 11 albums of 2011
As the year 2011 draws to a close, it is time to reflect on what was good and not so good about the year.
My main memories of 2011 are the three tours I embarked upon, the many many shows, the release of Katie Malco & The Slow Parade, End Of The Road festival, Edinburgh, meeting my main man Chris Rouse and my other main man Jon Pearce, finishing University, and having my heart broken for the second time in my 25 years.
So what music accompanied all these significant events?!
Queue, top 11 albums of 2011. (I know that traditionally it should be top 10, but I had 11, so shut up.)
I would first like to say, that this was an unbelievably difficult decision.
And I would like to list very strong contenders for these top ten spots. Had it been another mood on another day this list might look slightly different.
Here are the contenders:
Joy Formidable
Yuck
Tellison
Tubelord
TuneYards
The Computers
Defeater
Bright Eyes
Taking Back Sunday
Bombay Bicycle Club
City & Colour
Fucked Up
Danananannanakroyd
James Blake
And So I Watch You From Afar
The Vaccines
Lykke Li
Jamie Woon
SOOOOO.
Here goes nothing:
In at number 11: Touche Amore – The Parting of the sea between brightness and me
It’s so flipping angsty. Its dripping in angst. Its awesome.
10. Laura Marling – A Creature I Don’t Know
It hasn’t quite stuck with me yet, but the singles are bangin’ bruv.
If it’s as slow a grower as the last album then I’ll regret not putting it in here come the end of 2012. To avoid regret, here it is. Sophia is a TUNE.
9. The Decemberists – The King Is Dead
June Hymn. Sob sob sob. Colin’s voice does grate after a while, but the songs are just too damn good. YES Decemberists. You never disappoint. Except with that one song I hated from Picaresque. Apart from that you never disappoint.
8. Explosions in the Sky – Take Care Take Care Take Care
In my opinion, their best album to date! I even made it my album of the month when I worked at Banquet. It’s not as slow and proggy as their previous offerings, and I like their development. It’s still got that melancholy that the first album possessed, but has deffo moved on. If you’d have asked me 2 years ago if Explosions in the Sky would ever beat Decemberists in a top 10, I’d have laughed in your stupid face.
7. Radiohead – King of Limbs
I haven’t listened to this album all year through unlike the others. But when it came out I was non-stop with it. Like an addiction. Then I killed it I think. I don’t love it more than In Rainbows, but I love it waaaay more than Amnesiac. Therefore, it is deserving of this positioning in the top 10. I really like Lotus Flower.
6. Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues
This is better than their first album, there I said it. I can’t say anything more about it. I just really like the songs. The moment when Pecknold’s voice soars on that song (the name of which escapes me) is a magic moment in music history.
5. Lemuria – Pebbles
A cracking album this, a definite progression from the first album, really raw and genuine, and I love it. CATCHY. Track of note: One.
4. Rival Schools – Pedals
I never doubted for one second this would make my top 5. I love the single Wring It Out, in fact this album is a string of hits frankly, and I love that they haven’t changed, I love that they don’t try too hard to be something they’re not but just make super good rock songs.
3. Death Cab for Cutie – Codes & Keys
Sure, this decision might have come about after seeing them the other night. Sure, they might have been dangling at number 9 or 10 had I not seen them…….but they’re here now, so simmer down and let them be okay?
It’s catchy as ever, Death Cab doing what Death Cab do best. It would have had to have been preeeettty poor to not make it in to my top 10 because I love this band so much.
2. Bon Iver – Bon Iver
I was completely torn between this and my number 1. I cannot fault this album. I love every second of it. I love Beth/Rest, I love Perth, I love Towers and Holocene, I think it’s all awesome. These songs are genuinely four of the prettiest songs I have ever heard. Bravo Bon Iver. Bravo.
AND NUMBER 1 of 2011!
*drum roll*………..
David Bazan – Strange Negotiations.
What. A. Legend.
What. A. Beard.
Don’t Change. What. A. Tune.
Level With Yourself. YES Bazan. Yes.
Get in my ears and stay there.
Marry me Bazan. Have my hairy ugly babies.
So there it is.
I would be super interested to see your top 10 albums of 2011 as well, so please feel free to share!
